What to Expect with Acupuncture

For those of you who are new to acupuncture, you may be surprised by how relaxing a treatment is.  Lauren has a very gentle needle technique and uses only disposable needles.  Regular acupuncture treatments can strengthen the immune system and help reduce stress.

How Does Acupuncture Work?
Acupuncture works by re-establishing balance and harmony with the systems of the body. It is based on ancient Chinese theories of the flow of Qi (Energy) and Xue (Blood) through pathways that cover the body much like nerves and blood vessels do.  Modern research has shown that inserting acupuncture needles along these pathways release endorphines, increases blood cell counts, and heightens the immune system.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

No, acupuncture does not hurt.  Today's acupuncture needles are very thin and fine (and disposable).  While a sensation, such as a slight pinch, may be felt upon needle insertion, the sensation quickly dissipates.  Most patients find that acupuncture treatments are very relaxing and virtually pain free.

Are the Results an Example of the Placebo Effect?

Definitely not.  There are many documented cases of acupuncture being used as the sole means of aneasthesia during surgery.  The effects are very real!  In addition, acupuncture has been used extensively on animals with great results.  Animals that were limping in pain walked more easily after acupuncture treatments.
